Animal health technician
The Ecomuseum Zoo is an educational animal park with a mission focused on education, applied research and conservation of the flora and fauna of the St. Lawrence Valley. Welcoming ambassador animals that have been injured, orphaned or born under professional human care, over 115 native species are represented in the fish, reptile, amphibian, bird and mammal groups.
Job Description :
Under the supervision of the Chief Technician – Animal Health, and in collaboration with the Chief Veterinarian, you will ensure the well-being of the animals in the Ecomuseum Zoo collection by providing them with appropriate health care.
You will act as the primary contact for animal health monitoring, providing the veterinarian with the information needed for ongoing surveillance. You will work in tandem with the Lead Technician on an opposite schedule, with overlapping days to ensure smooth and efficient communication.
Responsibilities :
- Daily monitoring of animal health with the head technician and/or veterinary team.
- Administer prescribed treatments and medications.
- Provide basic, emergency, intensive and nursing care under supervision.
- Perform clinical pathology tasks (preparation and reading of cytological samples).
- Take samples for diagnostic purposes, in accordance with veterinary guidelines.
- Assist the veterinarian during medical procedures.
- Manage medical supplies inventory and expiration dates.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste.
- Keep animal medical records up to date.
- Carry out planned preventive treatments (coprology, vaccination, sterilization).
- Manage first-aid kits on site.
- Participate in the overall management of animal files.
- Contribute to the Ecomuseum Zoo’s educational activities.
- Perform all other related tasks.
Qualifications :
- Diploma in animal health techniques from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar position (zoo or clinic).
- Experience in a non-profit organization (asset).
- Perfect bilingualism (French/English), both spoken and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access).
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or hold a valid Canadian work permit.
