Job Description :
Reporting to the VP Finance, this position is for a self-starter who is proactive and focused on collaborative excellence. You must demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility, agility, be highly organized, be able to effectively manage several projects in parallel, and have the perseverance to overcome obstacles and achieve targeted results. You also possess a high level of integrity and professionalism, with a good understanding of ethical standards in accounting and finance.
Responsibilities :
- Handle all day-to-day financial activities, including transactions, bookkeeping, accounts receivable and payable, and accounting processes.
- Ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.
- Manage month-end closing: journal entries, reconciliations, cost allocations, currency conversion (FX), financial statement generation and investor reporting.
- Ensure that accounting policies comply with current standards.
- Support VP Finance and management in reporting to government agencies for grants and contracts.
- Contribute to the preparation and monitoring of the company’s annual budget.
- Conduct the necessary analyses to understand the discrepancies between forecasts and actual results.
- Provide financial forecasts and analyze trends to support strategic decision-making.
- Lead the annual audit.
- Ensure compliance with all local, provincial and federal laws and regulations, including tax legislation.
- Oversee the preparation and filing of tax returns, and ensure their timely compliance.
- Design, implement and monitor internal controls to protect corporate assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Recommend improvements to optimize the efficiency and accuracy of financial operations.
- Monitor and manage the company’s cash position, and develop foreign exchange and cash management strategies.
Qualifications :
- Professional accounting designation (CPA).
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in an accounting firm or finance/accounting department, including at least 1 year in a Controller-level position in a small to medium-sized organization.
- Sound knowledge of accounting principles and financial standards (e.g. GAAP, IFRS).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to popularize complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Great attention to detail – an essential quality for any good accountant!
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, financial modeling, data analysis).
- QuickBooks Online proficiency.
- Versatility and enthusiasm – ready to step in wherever needed.
- Practical experience in an agile and flexible environment (e.g. start-up).
- Solid experience in managing monthly closings.
- Knowledge of the SR&ED tax credit program, audits and associated reporting requirements.
